From Poetry to Management: Victoria Markova's TOP-5 Books

A philology student shares her book selection

1. Yuri Lotman "On Poets and Poetry: Analysis of Poetic Text"

The author views a poetic text as a multi-layered, polysemantic construct where poetry is a "language" with its own unique structures and mechanisms, revealing the connection between the poet, the work, and the reader. Poetry often speaks about itself through metaphors and symbols. This book is a great resource for writing your own poetic texts, and for me, it's a reference book

2. Akio Morita "Made in Japan: Akio Morita and Sony"

The autobiography of the co-founder of the Japanese company that gifted us televisions, professional audio and video equipment, and more. Fans of Japanese culture will be interested in learning about the Japanese management model. After reading, you might ask yourself: could I live and work like a Japanese person?

3. Yevgeny Zamyatin "We"

A dystopian novel predicting a totalitarian future. However, in my opinion, Zamyatin offers a glimmer of hope at the end, whereas George Orwell's dystopia "1984" depicts the complete destruction of individuality, leaving the reader in utter despair

4. Marianna Goncharova "Just in Blue and Sneakers"

A story about teenager Liza Bernadskaya, who keeps a diary describing her life with a serious illness, hospital routines, first love, friendship, anxieties, and encounters with the world. It's a book about strength of spirit, sincerity, friendship, and love, showing how one can remain open and vibrant despite hardships. In school, we staged a play based on this story, which can now be found on RuTube under the title "Pale Liza"

5. Jojo Moyes "Me Before You"

A love story that can break your heart. That very book whose pages bear the tear stains of me and my friends who borrowed it to read. There is also a film adaptation of the novel starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin
