«It’s not for military glory, but it’s the fight for the life on earth»

Poem «Vasily Terkin. Book about the fighter»

Wartime publications are exhibited in the Collection «Rare book» of RUDN Library; these books are assigned separately. It seems rather incredible now, but during the Great Patriotic War more than one million copies of only literary fiction were issued, however mostly in a small format (for better storage in an army shirt pocket, map case or in a duffel bag). One of those pocket books to find at our library stacks – a famous poem «Vasily Terkin» by A.T. Tvardovsky, that was boosting the soldiers’ morale. This text had been written while the war was on, all its’ 29 chapters appeared during the wartime.

The front-line soldiers had rapturously accepted the poem, and then looked forward to the continuation, each new chapter became a big event. Smart hero-soldier is a collective image. The poet Alexander Tvardovsky, being at the front-line too, has incorporated sharp, keen observations, phrases, and sayings into his poetic language. The poem expressions have turned into the catch phrases.

«No, guys, without proud. Peering the future not, I say: Why an order? To a medal, I accord»

A.T. Tvardovsky is a creator of a charming character of the private soldier, the one to rely on in a labour or a fight. A resilient lad, who is able to brighten up the burden of the war routine. A.T. Tvardovsky has accented not the hostilities, but the human life and war experiences and the way the people face their fear.
