Which trilogy provides readers with a unique look at Asian family traditions?

Fascinating literary tour with Ekaterina Tutova

We take an exciting literary tour under the «Top-5 Books» column today together with Ekaterina Tutova, associate Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty of Philology. Therefore, Ekaterina, out of her deep knowledge and passion for literature, has chosen five indelibly impressive books in English.

The first book to talk about is Jane Austen's "Persuasion". This is probably her the most underrated, but at the same time the most fully fledged work.

For eight years a noblewoman Anne Elliott, the main character, has been living and regretting her rejection a simple sailor Frederick Wentworth. After the years Wentworth, has become a rich and successful captain, returns to his hometown. His pride is hurt, and he still resents Ann. The book subtly reflects the feelings of the characters, which, due to the social mores of the early 19th century, had to be hidden. If there had happened an opportunity to talk openly to understand each other, the situation would have turned out another way. I enjoy rereading this book. I believe, it is this the one the most romantic Austin’s story!

In continuation to the sailors’ topic: do you want to know what book has inspired Taylor Swift and the Pirates of the Caribbean filmmakers?

This is "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner". In the poem, the old mariner tells the story of his wanderings, when an Albatross has arrived on the ship. The sailors perceived the bird as a good sign and were happy about it, until an old sailor suddenly killed it with a crossbow. After this incident, disasters began, those ended with a shipwreck and the death of the entire team. The mariner has survived, but he has to redeem himself by retelling endlessly his story to give a lesson about the nature and its creatures significance.

It's hard to imagine English literature without Charles Dickens books! It is very difficult to choose one out of his works, but I still try, and it is "Great Expectations".

This is a book about great love. The one for which a simple peasant boy, Philip, becomes an educated London gentleman! It is also a book about friendship and mutual support! Dickens has created unforgettable characters and his exciting plot would engage students of literature, history and psychology.

Somerset Maugham's The Burden of Human Passions is to call a book of complex human emotions and moral choices too.

The main character of the novel, also Philip, put to the proof and challenge, but eventually finds a way to a personal liberation and harmony. This novel is considered a biography, Maugham shows the human passions turn into a burden, keeping a person away from happiness and self-actualization.

And another book about love and class affiliation, or rather three. Kevin Kwan – the trilogy "Crazy Rich Asians".

200 years after Jane Austen's novels, love couples still face social prejudice. Rachel, a Chinese-American university lecturer, travels to Singapore to meet her groom’s, Nick Young, "insanely rich" family. The trilogy delivers a unique perspective on the culture and traditions of Asian families, including their common values, customs and social norms. A very beautiful Hollywood movie was made after the first book of the trilogy.

You will find something to read this summer evening, I hope!
